Boring is the process of making an existing hole bigger in diameter and depth. It is more accurate than drilling. alongside boring tools, steady and dependable boring bars play a critical role in ensuring an accurate boring process.

When conducting a boring operation, it is important to ensure that you have proper clearance for boring. because the boring bar can hit the workpiece in various places. When you approach your final pass, you might need to take 4-5 different skin passes to check the accuracy of your process. Having your boring bar positioned a bit above or below center-line might offer you ideal clearance on the bottom of your boring bar. This is important because in many cases, the bottom of the boring bar hits the bottom of the hole, especially if your boring bar is almost matching the size of your hole.

Considerations for installation of boring bars

It is important to consider what type of material, what type of hole and what size and type of boring bar you are working with.. In many cases, boring bar is not made to fit a specific machine but can be shifted between different machines on the floor. When installing a boring bar on a machine, the following factors need to be considered

  • The milling sleeve and the boring spindle should rotate in unison
  • There should be total CNC control over the lateral movement of the boring spindle
  • There should exist an independent co-linear axis to the machine and the table or column of the machine tool should move in the same direction as the boring spindle.
